How To Clean Your Forklift

Forklifts are often treated simply as a tool, left to the elements and expected to carry out any task asked of them. Like any vehicle, however, sometimes a little bit of TLC can go a long way.

Simply giving your forklift a wash once in a while will not only improve its appearance, but it will also will help to prolong its working life.

Here are a few basic tips and tricks to get your forklift squeaky clean.

Use a pressure sprayer

Using a sponge and soapy water to wash a forklift may seem like the perfect punishment for the workshop rookie, but investing in a good pressure washer is not only easier but it's safer too.

While dirt and mud will accumulate on the truck as expected, you may also find yourself coming in contact with residue from transporting hazardous goods. Direct contact is easily avoided with a pressure washer and they are also fantastic at cutting through grime and oil deposits.

Soaps ain't soaps

If you need some extra help breaking through the grime on your forklift, make sure you use a biodegradable, non-toxic soap solution. It will naturally take a bit of water and soap to get it up to scratch, and this waste needs to go somewhere, so avoid contaminating the environment by using an eco-friendly product.

Order, order!

First of all, remove large, loose build-up with a broom or brush. Pre-soak the dirtiest areas if necessary. Work from top to bottom so the dirt and grime flows down. Don't forget to clean the underside of the truck as well! A pressure washer attachment may assist in helping you get to these hard-to-reach areas.

Like a lifter in the sun

Make sure your forklift dries thoroughly. The best method is to park the forklift in the sun for a few hours, ensuring all critical components are dry before operating it again. Be sure to check all mechanisms are functioning correctly and all excess water has dried before resuming normal duties.

A clean forklift is a happy forklift. Build-up of dirt over time may cause corrosion or mechanical failure. Ensuring your forklifts are presentable also helps create a professional image for your company.

Remember, if it's seen, keep it clean!
